A Home With history

Built in 1905, Relic & Riot began as a duplex home at the heart of Charlotte's Mill Village.  More than just housing, these villages were vibrant communities where families worked in the textile mills, raised children and built lives around the steady hum of industry.

Restoration with purpose

When the building was restored, the goal was never to erase history—but to highlight it. The original floors were carefully refinished, reclaimed wood found new life, and heart pine beams salvaged from the original NoDa Brewing building were incorporated. Every detail was chosen to preserve the spirit of the neighborhood’s layered past.

A NAME WITH LEGACY

For 10 years, the name "NoDa Company Store" paid homage to the historic “company stores” that once served mill and mining families. These mercantile shops supplied essentials—often on credit deducted directly from workers’ paychecks. While the system carried challenges, the stores were also community hubs, where neighbors gathered and bonds were formed. The legacy of these places remains deeply rooted in American culture, even immortalized in the folk classic “Sixteen Tons” with the line: “I owe my soul to the company store.”

A Bridge between past and present

Today, Relic & Riot honors the long heritage  of the expansive mill district while also embracing the neighborhood’s transformation into Charlotte’s arts-forward district. It remains what it has always been at its core—a gathering place, a space where history is preserved, where art and creativity flourishes, and our vibrant diverse community thrives.
